Golf bags have to do a lot more than look good

With fourteen golf clubs to carry when playing a round of golf, the selection of a golf bag is crucial to protecting your golf set.

Golf bags, generally, can be classed into two categories – cart bags and stand bags.

Cart bags, as the name implies, are designed to be transported around the golf course on a cart or golf buggy. Cart bags come in a myriad of designs possessing many key features. The average weight of a cart bag ranges from 3 kg up to 5kg. When selecting a cart bag look out for key features. Some bags have more features than others and you want to be sure your cart bag has everything you need. Features to consider include:

    • overall design of the golf bag relative to organisation of the golf set
    • internal divider design of the golf bag that separates each golf club
    • strength and durability of the fabric used in the construction of the golf bag
    • strength and durability of the tubular construction of the golf bag
    • size and stability of the base of the golf bag
    • internal lining of the pockets
    • size and design of the storm cover
    • number of readily accessible storage compartments
    • size and depth of storage compartments
    • accessibility of storage compartments
    • inclusion of an external putter storage compartment
    • inclusion of an external umbrella compartment
    • inclusion of “dry” storage pockets
    • inclusion of insulated cooler pockets with ample drainage for cleaning
    • inclusion of ball, towel and tee storage compartments or attachments
    • the weight of the golf bag
    • warranty extended on the workmanship of the product

Stand bags are commonly referred to as “Carry Bags with legs” due to their appearance and design. As the name implies, stand bags are designed to be transported over the shoulders of the player, without the need for a cart or golf buggy. When the stand bag is placed on the ground, the bag relies on two “legs” triggered from the base. These legs automatically open, presenting a “tri-pod” support for the golf bag. Stand bags tend to be lighter and smaller than cart bags, average weight ranging between 1.5kg to 3kg, and offer fewer features than cart bags. Look out for the following features when choosing a stand bag:

    • the weight of the stand bag
    • the ability to comfortably store the golf set without excessive congestion
    • the compact nature of the stand bag
    • the number of storage pockets available
    • the design of the shoulder strap to distribute the weight of the bag and set when carrying
    • the strength of the stand and related triggering mechanism
    • the ability to house the stand when transporting
